ChildFund Alliance World Index — Amplifying Voices for Inclusion
An interactive longform telling the story of the ChildFund Alliance World Index, which measures the social inclusion of women and children across countries. Data storytelling with the voice of children, a card-based structure, and micro-interactions.
The challenge
The ChildFund Alliance World Index measures the level of social inclusion of women and children across countries. A complex, rich, dense dataset — capable of speaking to human-rights experts but at risk of remaining invisible to the people who live those rights every day.
The original report was a technical PDF. Our job: turn it into a digital story that worked for the expert audience and for those encountering the topic for the first time — without compromising the rigor of the data or the voice of those at the center: children.
The objective
Design an engaging narrative longform that makes the World Index accessible to a global audience, putting the voices of children at the heart of the narrative — not as decoration.
The approach: data storytelling with voice
Three guiding principles:
1. Card-based structure. We broke the longform down into modular cards that readers can move through at their own pace. One card = one idea, one metric, one story. No forced-scroll paywall.
2. Illustration and collage. To bring warmth to the data we paired infographic rigor with child-like illustrations and collage. Tones that recall a child’s hand — not the generic NGO stock photo.
3. Micro-interactions. Light animations, narrative transitions, scroll-reactive elements. A user experience that invites exploration, not passive reading.
What we delivered
- Responsive digital longform optimized for desktop and mobile
- A modular narrative card system (reusable in future editions)
- Custom illustrations + collage system
- Micro-interactions and animations tied to content
- A navigation system that lets readers control their own pace
The outcome
- Perceived length reduced thanks to the card-based structure (active reading experience under 10 minutes)
- High message accessibility: non-specialist readers can grasp the meaning of the Index and read specific cases
- An editorial pattern reusable for future editions of the World Index without a redesign
- Adopted as the digital reporting standard of ChildFund Alliance + WeWorld
