BC3 Annual Reports — Crafting Stories of Climate Action
The 2022 and 2023 annual reports for the Basque Centre for Climate Change. We turn climate research data into visual narrative — eco-friendly print, dedicated landing pages, advanced data visualization.
The challenge
The Basque Centre for Climate Change produces a significant volume of scientific research on climate change every year — peer-reviewed papers, Horizon Europe participation, policy projects. The annual report is the moment when this mass of research has to speak to very different stakeholders: funders, policymakers, academic partners, and the general public.
The challenge: turn a technical report that risks sitting on a shelf into a communication tool that sparks conversations.
The objective
Design the 2022 and 2023 annual reports so they:
- Communicate research findings clearly
- Sustain stakeholder engagement
- Reflect BC3’s commitment to climate research and sustainability (including physically, in print)
- Work as an ecosystem across paper + digital + social, not as separate assets
The approach: data storytelling across channels
1. Visual consistency across years. The 2022 report laid the foundations — clean layout, infographic system, recognizable palette. The 2023 report built on that base, refining the print design and expanding data visualizations to highlight the variations between the two years of research.
2. Print + digital + social as an ecosystem. For each year:
- Printed report in a curated editorial format (eco-friendly: recycled paper, low-impact inks, printers with certified chain of custody)
- Dedicated digital landing page summarizing the main sections, with highlights, infographics, and key takeaways
- Social campaigns with visual highlights from the report for stakeholders and the broader public
3. Storytelling through visualizations. For 2023 we introduced advanced data visualization techniques inside the printed piece to emphasize the variations in research findings. The report becomes readable as a story, not a statistical appendix.
What we delivered
2022 Report
- Print — clean modern layout, custom infographics that simplify dense scientific data
- Dedicated digital landing page that expands the document’s accessibility
2023 Report
- Print — a refined redesign building on the 2022 edition, with expanded data visualization
- Digital landing page with improved navigation and dynamic infographics
- Dedicated social campaigns for each report
The outcome
- Reinforced brand identity — consistency across print, digital, and social consolidated BC3’s positioning as a reference research center
- Reusable system — the editorial pattern became the standard for future annual report editions, with no need to start from scratch
- Message accessibility — the 2023 report generated more social interaction and more landing-page traffic than 2022
- Sustainability in production — paper, ink, and printing choices aligned with BC3’s mission
